My name is Jill Silberstein and I’m a DONA certified birth doula. I grew up in Rockville, Maryland and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Art History. I recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee after living in New York City for 13 years.
Since I was a little girl, I was drawn to birth and the mystery of pregnant women. I remember playing baby doctor and meticulously displaying my pretend instruments (neon pink and green hair clips) next to my friend-turned-patient who was instructed to lie on the floor with a pillow stuffed in her flannel shirt.
Years passed and I didn’t just “grow out” of my fascination with birth and pregnancy. It was channeled into anatomy, biology, and women’s studies courses in college. My first epiphany occurred after graduation when I attended a lecture by Anna Verwaal. That moment I was inspired to put my passion into action and begin my journey as a birth-worker…somehow… someway.
Since graduating college in 2003, and participating in the Semester at Sea study abroad program, I gained experience on the television commercial production and post-production side of the advertising industry. I worked both on staff and as a freelancer at such companies as MacKenzie Cutler, Anonymous Content, RSA, LEGS, and Smuggler. I also ran the in-house content departments at Code and Theory and Mother, both advertising agencies, producing digital films, photo shoots, social content, documentaries and award-winning commercials.
While at Mother, I attended an assistant midwifery workshop at THE FARM with Ina May Gaskin and the farm midwives. Even then, becoming a doula was more than a fantasy but not quite a career. That thought changed after our closing circle, that magical week, when Pamela Hunt took me by the hand and said, “I know you’re going to do something great.”
I enjoy continuing my education and being involved in the community. I attended the 2011 DONA conference, the 2012 Midwifery Today conference, and the Birthing From Within Mentor workshop in April 2012 as well as coordinating the Improving Birth Rally that year in NYC. In 2014, I graduated from a three year Herbal Apprenticeship with Robin Rose Bennett. In 2015, I became a Certified Lactation Counselor and attended a training on Gena Kirby’s Rebozo techniques. My latest interest is in polarity therapy and I’m working on my certification! I attend women’s circles and gatherings regularly.
Here Lil’ Birdie is in wings-up mode in Nashville, Tennessee as I get acclimated to this beautiful city.
Hope to see you around the neighborhood. I usually have my three-legged yorkie in tow, so I’m easy to spot.
